Encyclopaedia Africana ®

For centuries there have been in Africa many things and events of great significance to the world which are now beginning to be treated seriously by scholars all over the world.

Up to now, it has been a matter of no little regret to many of us in Africa that not only have Africa's many and varied contributions to the social, cultural, political, educational, scientific, and technological development of our universe been underestimated and on many occasions even consciously distorted, but much of what is in print has been written with a foreign slant.

In the Encyclopaedia Africana®, I see an opportune and welcome moment for Africa to reveal the genius of her people, their history, culture, and institutions, their achievements as well as their shortcomings.

I have great faith in what the Encyclopaedia Africana® has already done, and in its continuing efforts. And it is, therefore, with much personal satisfaction that I welcome the first volume of what it is my earnest hope is only the first of many more to come.
